Work on Campus
Studying in the USA is not cheap. At Calistudies, we understand that the financial burden can be tough, even with financial support. A smart way to ease your financial stress is to work on campus alongside your studies. Working at your school is also a great way to expand your social network and meet other students and staff.
No work authorization is required to take a job on campus. Once you have completed a semester at a U.S. university or college with an F-1 student visa, you are allowed to work part-time up to 20 hours per week, as long as your employer operates within the school. During school breaks, when classes are not in session, you can work full-time.
Find Employment
If you are already on campus, it’s worth walking around and looking for potential employers. There are often available positions, such as working as a cashier in the school cafeteria, as a tutor in a subject, or perhaps in an administrative role at one of the campus offices (there are likely many). Print out a few copies of your CV and introduce yourself.
If you are not near campus, it can be a good idea to check your school’s website or student portal. Available positions may be listed there. There might also be a newsletter you can subscribe to in order to stay updated on new job openings. Additionally, check with your school’s international student office for tips.
Social Security Card
Once you have received a job offer, you need to go to a Social Security office to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN), which is the equivalent of a personal identity number or coordination number. The application process is handled at the office, and after a few weeks, you should receive your Social Security Card in the mail—voilà, now you can start working!
The Social Security Card is an important document that should be kept safe. Having a unique SSN is an asset if you plan to stay in the USA for an extended period and can be useful if you want to work there again in the future.
Other Ways for Students to Work Besides On-Campus Jobs
Once you have earned a degree—Associate, Bachelor’s, or Master’s—you can apply for work authorization through the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. You can read more about Optional Practical Training (OPT) here. If you have already worked on campus, you do not need to obtain a Social Security Card again. You will keep the same number and do not need to visit the Social Security Office again.
Good luck with your job search!
